In no particular order, here are some things we've learned...

1. Our car is awesome.

Not only does it fit THREE bikes, it fits two tents, three sleeping bags/pads, food for an army, and entertainment for hours in the car. It also has a seat in the middle that turns around and it has its' own library. Try and top that.

2. Silan likes cookies.

Turns out we all like cookies. But Silan likes them the most. When we have a bit more time, we'll upload a brief video giving insight in to Silan's....we'll call it 'problem.' Also to come, a picture of the rather unpleasant not she left by her cookie.

3. Pictures on the beach are NEVER boring.

The beach to ourselves, with the sun peaking through the clouds, we decided a photo shoot was in need. Our barefeet in the cold Pacific water was not even a problem! This was following a brief bath in the ocean...enough said.

4. Pack extra clean clothes.

Let me explain: These socks are standing horizontal on their own. This is not a magic trick. Or illusion. On our last night, she brought them in on our last night to dry by the fire. To our delight, her socks dried hard...like preserved halibut as she puts it.

If you want to entertain yourself with similar socks, do the following:
a) Wear for 6 days. Does not have to be consecutive.
b) Bike 120km in said socks.
c) Bathe in the ocean with them.
d) Leave in the rain for three full days.

5. Starting a fire is neither an art, nor a science.

After our first successful fire (pictured here), we all thought we had it down. Starting a fire was easy! Scrunch up some paper, throw some little sticks on, then some big sticks, then some logs and voila!!! Fire.

If only it were that easy. I'm not even sure now how any of the fires were started. But we had FOUR fires. And we each took turns. Practice does not make perfect.

Hopefully you've now learned something as well.

Just a brief update: We are now in Prince Rupert, back from a week in the Charlottes (the Queen Charlottes). Our biking adventure was amazing and we are now all experts at using gears. We spent four nights at a rustic cabin along the road to Tow Hill, east of Masset. We did some hiking, beach combing, general relaxing, silly picture taking, and fire stoking. Tomorrow, we are off to Alaska on the Alaska Marine Highway. I'm sure there'll be even more beautiful pictures to follow!

Here are a few more silly ones :)

Here we go again!

It's been a while since this blog was updated but not to worry! We are back on the road again...literally :) Tomorrow marks the beginning of seventy-day adventure. The road trip of all road trips: we aim to conquer North America, north to south. It all started about nine months ago when Silan IMed me with the vague question of: "You know what we should do sometime?" Being the mature person I am, I listed off some really great things we could do [watch the stars come out at night? nap at the beach? travel with nothing but clothes on our back? camp? go on an adventure? to name a few]. As always, Silan ignored my suggestions and responded with the suggestion that started it all: We should save up for a cheap used car (cheap though reliable) and just spend some time and drive it all over. Like up to Alaska, down to the states with our stuff in the car and a tent and stuff...and stay in motels and stuff every once in a while to clean up and stuff.

For fear of sounding redundant, that is basically our trip :) Minus the motels. Save a few nights in Massett and a couple other destinations along the way, we will be tenting for the better part of two months. I really do not know what to expect even though we've been planning meticulously since day one. The last time I went camping was in 1oth grade. Or maybe 9th. At least 6 years. I haven't driven more than five hours in a day. Nor have I biked for more than an hour at a time. I'm not particularly scared of anything, thankfully. I know this will be a summer to remember, regardless of what happens. I can only hope we don't meet a bear along the way. not because I'm afraid of bears...I'm afraid of how long Silan will be incapacitated for.

We are hoping to steal internet along the way, as well as visit an internet cafe here and there. While in the US, I'll be updating our status via Twitter so stay tuned!
